To Bleach Or Not To Bleach?

Our FacialCare sponges are the finest quality, Mediterranean Fine Silk sea sponges that Mother Nature produces. For applying or removing makeup, as a makeup blender, for cleansing or exfoliating, there really are no better tools for the job.

First off, they are a zero waste product. Sponges grow naturally, when disposed of they decompose and since we use decomposable packaging there’s really no waste.

Secondly being natural and chemical free means they are really kind to your skin. Hypo-allergenic, they are perfect for sensitive skin, especially for young babies. But the pore structure of the sponges is where the magic really comes from. This fantastic system of pores allows for soap, creams and gels to be pulled into the sponge along with water just by squeezing your hand whilst bathing. Another squeeze and you notice how the sponge is pumping our a rich lather from it’s tube-like structures. And a few more squeezes of the sponge under clear water and all of the soap is completely rinsed out with minimum effort. So simple, so effective.

Allowing water and air to flow through keeps the sponge self cleaning and inhibits growth and cultivation of ‘nasties’ which in turn keeps it smelling fresh. That is a noticeable benefit when compared to washable cotton makeup wipes, a great natural alternative to disposables. The cotton fibres are dense, taking much longer than a sponge to dry out so inherently staying damp for longer. The damp encourages unwanted growth and cultivations which lead to unpleasant odours. Additionally, cotton’s dense fiber structure makes washing out embedded grease or makeup so much harder and needing so much more energy than a simple rinse of a natural sponge.

The best cleansing tool we clever humans can come up with is a synthetic sponge created from petroleum products or perhaps a cotton based wipe which has a huge water footprint. Meanwhile, nature has created the amazing, efficient pore system of natural sea sponges. Mother Nature really knows best.

What is ethical harvesting? It is a gentle process where sponges are removed from their source without touching the roots. Similar to pruning a tree, this allows stronger and bigger branches of sea sponge to regrow. The gentle harvesting process also causes millions of sponges cells to be released into the waters, where they are fertilized, attach to sea rocks, and grow into new sponges.

Plastic is the biggest agitator of marine biology, and possibly the biggest pollutant in the entire world.

Because the sea gifted us with these beautiful sponges, we consider it our duty to show respect in return by minimizing plastic in our production.

A bleached sponge will typically last for six months, an unbleached equivalent will last a bit longer.

When a sponge has reached the end of its useful life it can be thrown away with the regular organic household waste or even composted.

When composted you will be returning to the Earth what came from the Earth, allowing your sponge to become worm food and soil nutrients.

An unbleached sponge maintains it’s gorgeous silky texture, plus is more substantial and durable. A bleached sponge has an airy softness, but they tend to deteriorate more quickly.

So why do we see so many bleached sponges in shops if they’re not the best?

Because most other companies choose to promote bleached sponges, meaning they’re the most frequently seen on the High Street, warping the consumer perception to think yellow is better or at least the norm.

But why? Companies know that time is money, so they usually promote products that take the least amount of time and effort to supply. To get a sea sponge ready to package with no impurities, it’s simple to over bleach it and dissolve much of the organic debris which would otherwise have to be picked out by hand. Time is money!

On the other hand, the conscientious manufacturer spends time inspecting and hand cleaning unbleached sponges before they are packaged as a premium product.
